Spode New Bridge Plate c1932
SPODE42085

Imperial: 6.5 ins
Metric: 16.5 cm

New Bridge or Queen Charlotte pattern, here pattern number Y2832. The original Bridge pattern was derived from a Chinese original and introduced about 1808. Much later in 1884 the pattern was re-engraved and renamed New Bridge. Here printed in a deep blue with gilt rim. Backstamp: Impressed Copeland. Green printed seal backstamp, with Copeland Spode England and New Stone. Also blue printed "Queen Charlotte Pattern on Spode Stone Body. Purchased by Her Majesty at the Works on July 3rd 1817." According to Robert Copeland The Times reported a visit to Spode's London showroom on that day and that Her Majesty ordered some of the "newly invented china, called stone china, by Mr Spode...", but no evidence has been found to identify the pattern or that the china was indeed delivered before she died in 1818. Pattern number Y2832 in red script and impressed date code for 1932. Some wear to the gilt, few signs of use, but overall excellent condition.
