Meat Dish or Platter c1845 Maker: Challinor  Pattern:Italian
Meat Dish or Platter c1845
Edward Challinor was one of several potters, who copied Spodes Italian. This meat platter has light crazing with a touch of staining here and there to the face, but will display OK as it is bright and clean overall. Do not look on the back as it is stained and the glaze is flaking off, so one to pop on the dresser and leave there.

Wood and Challinor of Tunstall, Staffordshire were active 1828 to 1845 and their Continental Views Series, consists of named European scenes. Many travellers have arrived in Italy from Switzerland via the Simplon Pass, using a road that was begun in 1800 under Napoleon. Today though they are just as likely to be on a train hurtling through the Simplon Tunnel. This scene appears to be previously unrecorded and shows the Swiss village of Simplon-Dorf set amongst the mountains. Blue printed cartouche backstamp, including Simplon and the initials W&C. The glaze is finely crazed, but otherwise excellent condition.

Bourdaloue c1835 Maker: Wood and Challinor  Pattern:Mesina
Bourdaloue c1835
These oval pots go under various names, but their purpose was singular. Today most often called a bourdaloue supposedly so named after Pere Louis Bourdaloue (1632-1704) a Jesuit preacher at the court of Louis XIV, whose long sermons left the ladies of the court in some discomfort. However, the first known bourdaloue was of Dutch delftware and made about 1710, so this explanation appears to be apocryphal. They are also known as coach pots and crinoline slippers. They were designed to offer particular convenience for ladies forced to endure long coach journeys, operas as well as church services! Backstamp: Mesina W & C. There is a little wear to the handle otherwise excellent condition.
