Meat Dish or Platter c1830 Maker: Cormie  Pattern:Long Tailed Pheasant blue with colour
Meat Dish or Platter c1830
At first sight this is a Mason's piece, certainly the quality is good and it is one of their well-known patterns. However, the back tells another story and we have attributed this small platter to John Cormie of Burslem active 1818 to 1834/6, although there is a chance that it was made by one of the Hackwood partnerships. A most attractive platter, with the design blue printed under the glaze and then hand applied colour. Backstamp: blue printed floral cartouche with urn and the words Ironstone China. A little minor wear, mainly on the back otherwise excellent condition.

Jug or Pitcher c1825 Maker: Cormie  Pattern:Lyme Castle
Jug or Pitcher c1825
John Cormie of Burslem was active 1818 to 1834/6 and to date has not had the recognition he deserves. He made quality wares at the Bell Works and from 1831 at the large Nile Street works, later to be home to Doulton. The source print for this scene has not been identified, although it has been suggested that it might be Lympne Castle in Kent, but it bears little resemblance to Lympne, which stands on a hill. However, there are similarities with the view used by Woods of Lympne Castle, so it may be one and the same. Blue printed cartouche backstamp with Lyme Castle and the initials I C incorporated. Other than a little wear to the rim, this jug is in superb condition.

Dinner Plate c1830 Maker: Cormie  Pattern:Pekin Sketches
Dinner Plate c1830
This series pattern is normally attributed to Joseph Clementson of Hanley, but we believe it was made by John Cormie of Burslem active 1818 to 1834/6, as the pattern style, style of backstamp and initials I C are more likely to be Cormie. Typical romanticised Chinese scene. Blue printed cartouche backstamp with Pekin Sketches within pagoda and initials IC below. Tiny chip to rim and couple of minor knocks to glaze, with few signs of wear, but overall lovely bright and clean plate, with sound glaze.

Meat Dish or Platter c1830 Maker: Cormie  Pattern:Ruins
Meat Dish or Platter c1830
This series pattern is normally attributed to Joseph Clementson of Hanley, but we believe it was made by John Cormie of Burslem active 1818 to 1834/6, as the pattern style, style of backstamp and initials I C are more likely to be Cormie. After Cormies's bankruptcy and sale it seems that this design was continued by Hopkin and Vernon of Central Pottery, Burslem, who presumably bought the printing plates at the auction. This platter has a gadrooned rim and is printed in brown, with a floral border surrounding a romantic scene of a castellated building in a rural setting. The background is quite a dark off-white. There is a brown printed backstamp of a capital of a column set in foliage, with Ruins and the initials I C. There are a few signs of use, a nick to the gadrooned rim and the glaze is crazed, taking up a little light staining, which is most noticeable on the back.
Dimensions: 38.5 cm x 32.5 cm / 15 ins x 13.75 ins
