Maker: Don Pottery Pattern:Italian and Sicilian Views Series Comport c1820 Delightful scene of a town square with runaway steers, with dogs and men trying to stop them and bystanders chatting and drinking oblivious to the drama. The outside has a different more rural scene, with what appears to be a gypsy encampment. No maker's backstamp. The glaze is finely crazed and there is some rubbing or flaking to the glaze right on the rim, but otherwise in magnificent condition. A rare and pretty piece indeed. Also known as Named Italian Views Series. The scenes were taken from engravings published in Voyage Pittoresque ou Description des Royaumes de Naples et de Sicile by Jean Claude Richard de Saint-Non, published in Paris 1781-86. Alicata is a town on the south-west coast of Sicily. Some signs of wear, the glaze is crazed and there is a little associated staining in places, but all pretty minor. Overall bright, good condition and useful example from this popular series. No maker's backstamp. Provenance: The personal collection of Gresham Copeland, passing by descent to his son Robert Copeland. Collection identification label on back AGC E.28.
