Plate c1822 Maker: Henshall  Pattern:British Views Series
Plate c1822
Lovely plate with an unidentified scene in the Britsh Views Series, which shares the same border design as another series by the same maker, which is known as Fruit and Flower Border Series after the border. Usually attributed to Henshall & Co as that impressed backstamp has been found, but rarely. There were various partnerships involving Henshall and Williamson, but none recorded trading as Henshall & Co. Henshall and Eilliamson were in business in various guises from 1790 to about 1832. Backstamp: blue printed cartouche British Views and impressed 9 22. Crazed with a little minor wear and discolouration mainly to the outer rim and on the back there is a very very small chip to the foot.

Soup Tureen Stand Riding on The Estate c1810 Maker: Henshall  Pattern:Crocus Border
Soup Tureen Stand Riding on The Estate c1810
This is a wonderful piece, with the wide floral border surrounding the busy central scene. No backstamp. Crazed with some associated discolouration although this is mainly on the back. Also on the back are a couple of small chips to the foot. To the face there is also a little minor pitting here and there and as usual this sounds much worse than it looks.

Soup Plate Vale House c1825 Maker: Henshall  Pattern:Fruit and Flower Border Series
Soup Plate Vale House c1825
The maker is usually known as Henshall & Co. of Longport, Burslem active 1792 to 1830, although the partnerships were more complex than that and fuller details are available on request. The Fruit and Flower Border Series is of various English and European Scenes and here it is Vale House. The source print and location are not known, although Vale Lodge near Leatherhead, Surrey has been tentatively suggested. It is a charming scene of a travelling packman displaying his wares to a lady and her two children, whilst a small dog barks at her feet and two turkeys look on! All before a timbered and gabled country house. A few signs of wear and crazing lines in the glaze, but really lovely condition. Blue printed floral cartouche with Vale House and impressed date cypher for June 1825. Provenance: The personal collection of Gresham Copeland, passing by descent to his son Robert Copeland. Collection identification label on back AGC 1/1.

Condiment or Spice Set c1820 Maker: Henshall  Pattern:Guys Cliffe Warwickshire
Condiment or Spice Set c1820
A rare and attractive condiment or spice set, consisting of four containers with scroll side handles and covers on a moulded and indented tray, with side handles. The fifth container is missing. Henshall & Co were trading as Henshall, Williamson & Co by the time this set was made, but they are generally refered to as simply Henshall. Based at Longport, Staffordshire the partnerships spanned from 1792 to 1830. This view of Guys Cliffe is taken from Vol III of The Antiquarian and Topographical Cabinet by Storer and Greig, published 1808. Guy's Cliffe is today a hamlet in the civil parish of Leek Wootton and Guy's Cliffe just outside Warwick. The Cliffe is a sandstone outcrop, which overlooks the River Avon, named after the 10th Century Guy of Warwick, who lived the life of a penitent in a cave in the Cliffe. Samuel Greatheed, MP for Coventry, bought the estate in 1751 and built a house in the Palladian style. Later the actress Sarah Siddons was to become a frequent visitor. His son Bertie extended the house in the early 1800s. It passed by descent into the Heber-Percy family, who sold it in 1946. During the 1950s the house began a slide into dereliction and today is a ruin. The house and its setting are depicted in beautiful detail on the stand and the border consists of vignettes of the house and grounds. Each container is decorated with the same view in miniature and the covers with the vignettes. Overall this set is amazingly bright and clean. In detail, the stand has fine crazing to the glaze. The four covers have some crazing with staining underneath. All are missing part of the finials and one finial has been restuck. One cover has a corner missing and a hairline. The containers are crazed and stained, but somehow the glaze remains bright. Two side handles have been restuck and one is missing its top. We can find no record of a similar set surviving, although two similar containers are illustrated on page 101 of Vol II of The Dictionary of Blue & White Pottery by Coysh and Henrywood and described as ornate open salt cellars. This is a unique opportunity to acquire a rare and unusual set, which is both eye-catching and a sure-fire conversation piece.

Plate c1820 Maker: Henshall  Pattern:Spanish Procession
Plate c1820
This pattern is also known simply as Procession. It is attributed to the Henshall partnerships, which operated under various trading names from about 1790 to 1831. A busy scene on this smaller size of plate, which is not found often. No maker's backstamp. The glaze is finely crazed with just the hint of light associated staining in places, but very minor. The glaze still shines and this is a lovely plate.

Dinner Plate c1824 Maker: Henshall  Pattern:The Gleaners
Dinner Plate c1824
A delightful rural scene, which makes this a popular design today. As usual there is no maker's mark, but this pattern is usually attributed to Henshall & Co of Longport, active 1790-1828, because of the impressed date codes that appear, which on this plate is an impressed 4 over 24. The glaze of this plate is crazed with associated discolouration. There are three stilt marks on the border and a couple of very small glazing blemishes and on the back a possible short hairline, although it does not appear to go through. The glaze is still bright and shines almost like new.

Dessert Plate c1823 Maker: Henshall  Pattern:The Gleaners
Dessert Plate c1823
A delightful rural scene, which makes this a popular design today. As usual there is no maker's mark, but this pattern is usually attributed to Henshall & Co of Longport, active 1790-1828, because of the impressed date codes that appear, which on this plate is an impressed 9 over 23. The glaze is very finely crazed, almost imperceptibly so, but otherwise in superb condition.
