Maker: Hicks and Meigh Pattern:Number 21 Dessert Dish c1820 Hicks and Meigh of Shelton, Staffordshire, active 1806 to 1822, were important manufacturers of stone or ironstone china and their quality was generally considered superior to that of Mason and Davenport. They used numbers to identify their patterns and this is number 21, a chinoserie inspired floral design printed in lovely shades of blue with a white gadroon rim and gilt highlights to the ornate handles and foot. Typical blue printed backstamp of Royal Coat of Arms with Stone China and No 21 below. A soup plate is illustrated in Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone and Granite Wares by Geoffrey Godden, page 259 plate 201. This attractive dish has an under rim chip which just peeks through and a few minor signs of wear, but overall good condition.
