Sauce Tureen c1825 Maker: Marsh  Pattern:The Villager
Sauce Tureen c1825
Jacob Marsh was at Lane Delph from 1806 to 1818, until he built a new pottery at Church Street, Lane End, Longton, where he potted from 1819 to 1832. This sauce tureen has the most elaborate decoration with moulded acanthus leaves to the lid and body and two scroll side handles with beaded and shell decoration and Bachanalian face masks. One can only imagine the amount of skilled work that would have been required to produce such an exceptional piece. A sauce boat with similar decoration is illustrated on page 239 of The Dictionary of Blue and White Printed Pottery 1780 to 1880. There is a small chip to the rim of the lid and the nose of one of the face masks is missing, otherwise only a few rubs and signs of wear and in remarkably good condition overall. No maker's backstamp.
Dimensions: 14.5 cm diameter 16 cm high / 5.75 ins diameter 6.25 ins high

Plate c1830 Maker: Marsh  Pattern:The Villager
Plate c1830
This pattern is usually attributed to William Turner of Lane End, Staffordshire active 1806 to 1829, although the same design was produced by Jacob Marsh and Heathcoate & Co. This plate is unmarked and as it appears to be rather late example it has been attributed to Marsh, who was active 1819 to 1832. No maker's backstamp. The glaze is finely crazed and some signs of use and wear, mainly to the rim, but overall a good clean and bright example.
Dimensions: 26.5 cm / 10.5 ins
