|Maker: Masons Pattern:Queens' College Cambridge green
Soup Plate c1855
This plate would originally have been part of the College's dinner service and has a superb view of Queens' College, Cambridge including the Essex Building, the Mathematical Bridge over the River Cam or Granta and likewise part of the old Silver Street bridge. The College motto Floreat Domus, may this house flourish, is on the face at the bottom, although the printing is incomplete. Whilst the maker of this crockery is not conclusively recorded, it is believed to have been Masons, which supplied a number of Cambridge Colleges through Barretts, for over 200 years the leading Cambridge china merchant. Backstamp: green printed Queen's (sic) College M. Page. Martin Page was the College Porter from 1846 to 1871 and unusually as Porter was responsible for supplying the college crockery, which remained his property. There is a little wear and minor discolouration to the outer and inner rims and a little on the back. Also on the back some pitting to the foot rim which occurred during manufacture and has been glazed over. Sounds much worse than it looks.
