Tile c1880
Inspired by the romantic art of the French rococo artist Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721), this is one of twelve different scenes in this series, which was given the factory pattern number 12, thus it is one of the first Minton pictorial tile series. Introduced about 1845 it was still in production in 1885, so precise dating of individual tiles can be problematic. Backstamp: embossed Mintons China Works Stoke on Trent. Crazed there are two chips to the lower side one of which has resulted in a little loss of glaze to the lower rim. A little cement remains on the sides.
