Bowl c1800 Maker: Ferrybridge Pottery  Pattern:Circled Landscape
Bowl c1800
Lovely footed bowl beautifully patterned both inside and out. It was made at the Ferrybridge Pottery around 1800, when the works were known as Knottingley Pottery and Ralph Wedgwood had his short association with the other partners. The pattern is derived from a Worcester design and is usually known as Circled Landscape, although in reality the scenes are contained within ovals. A rare and lovely piece. No maker's backstamp. Bears paper label for the Doug Godden Collection No 1028. This bowl was described and illustrated on page 2 of the Friends of Blue Bulletin No 136 July 2007. Light crazing with a little minor surface scratching and on the side a small piece of excess clay or grit, otherwise excellent condition.
Dimensions: 18 cm diameter, 9 cm high / 7 ins diameter, 3.5 ins high

Plate c1836 Maker: Read Clementson and Anderson  Pattern:Wild Rose
Plate c1836
Made by Read, Clementson & Anderson of High Street, Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire, who appear to have been in business for only one year - 1836. The scene depicts Nuneham Courtenay, Oxfordshire, the seat of the Earl Harcourt, set in grounds laid out by Capability Brown around 1780. This is a popular pattern and often found without a backstamp, but here from a named maker. Blue printed circular floral cartouche and in the centre Improv'd Wild Rose R. C. & A. The print has some tiny spots of blue from the printing process, but lovely clean face. At 7 o'clock on the rim there is a tiny chip where it has been knocked and a hairline runs in for about 0.5ins 1.5cm. Otherwise lovely condition.
Dimensions: 27 cm / 10.5 ins

Meat Dish or Platter c1840 Maker: Reed and Taylor  Pattern:Floral Vase
Meat Dish or Platter c1840
This appears to be a previously un-recorded pattern, which we have attributed to Reed & Taylor of Swillington Bridge Pottery, Yorkshire. Boldly printed in a strong, deep flow blue. Backstamp: blue printed floral cartouche, with Floral Vase within. Impressed shield containing the words Opaque Granite China, with Lion and Unicorn as supporters. A similar backstamp was used by William Ridgway, but generally incorporates his initials. Wasters with this backstamp and no initials, have been found at the Swillington Bridge Pottery and the quality of the piece does not suggest a Ridgway origin. The glaze on this platter is rather thick and "gritty" and there are a few places where it has not taken or there are blemishes. There is wear and rubbing in places round the rim, but overall good condition.
Dimensions: 31.5 x 27 cm / 12.5 x 11.75 ins

There are two small chips under the rim of the bowl which just peek through and a small hairline. The ewer has a little blue smudging and underneath a little damage to the foot, overall absolutely fine and a wonderful set.
