Maker: Ridgway Pattern:Beauties of England and Wales Plate c1825 The maker of this series of rural views remains uncertain, although one item apparently bearing as part of the backstamp the initials JWR for John & William Ridgway has been reported, so it is tentatively attributed to them. Most of the views remain unidentified and items in this series are found rarely. Here the scene is of a rural church and in the foreground are cows and a duckpond complete with ducks, which have attracted the attention of a passing mother and child. It is believed that the views were inspired by engravings in The Beauties of England and Wales or Delineations Topograhical, Historical and Descriptive by Britton and Brayley published in 26 volumes between 1801 to 1808 and containing almost 700 views. This same scene is shown on a soup plate in The Dictionary of Blue and White Pottery by Coysh and Henrywood, Vol II page 26. Backstamp: Rock cartouche with Beauties of England and Wales and an impressed 6. This plate has a few signs of use and a tiny nick to the border at 9 o'clock. Otherwise, it looks virtually as new and is beautiful quality. Dimensions: 24.5 cm / 9.75 ins Our ref: 19CN31467 Buy similar now |
