Soup Tureen c1855
The scene depicts Nuneham Courtenay, Oxfordshire, the seat of the Earl Harcourt, set in grounds laid out by Capability Brown around 1780. Under various partnerships, the Sewell family ran St Anthony's Pottery at Newcastle upon Tyne from 1804 to 1878. This large oval, panel sided, soup tureen has seen some use in its long life. There is a short hairline by the spoon cut out on the cover and another on the rim of the tureen. The glaze is crazed, which has taken up some light staining in a few places. Overall, though it looks bright and clean and will look good on display. The design is printed in a deepish blue on a clear white body. The side handles and finial have blue printed florette decoration. There is an impressed backstamp, which is incomplete, but SEWELL is clearly visible.
