Maker: Twigg Pattern:Orchard Ewer and Bowl c1870 An unusual pattern on this ewer and bowl, with a superb border made up of vignettes showing baskets of apples and grapes, and rustic scene of three figures in a small boat on a lake. It is usually associated with Joseph Twigg & Bros of Newhill Pottery and Kilnhurst Pottery, Yorkshire active 1822 to 1881. The charming central design is of a gentleman up a ladder picking apples with his children below and wife watching from a rustic bench. This appears to be a fairly late manifestation as the printing plates are worn and it is printed in a pale blue rather than the darker blue favoured in earlier years. No maker's backstamp, so the attribution to Twigg cannot be certain. The bowl is crazed with some surface scratching and minor discolouration inside, mainly to the base. Underneath the bowl appear to be a couple of hairlines, but these do not go through to the inside. The ewer has a few signs of age, and light all over crazing with just a touch of discolouration inside and to the handle, and has a hairline to the spout, but overall has fared pretty well over the years and is still bright. Dimensions: Ewer 27.5 cm high, bowl 35 cm diameter, 11 cm high / Ewer 10.75 ins high, bowl 13.75 diameter 4.25 high Our ref: 19CN30837 Buy similar now |
