Maker: Unattributed Maker Pattern:Passion Flower Border Series Soup Plate Belvoir Castle c1825 This series, by a maker as yet unidentified, consists of views of notable houses and seats in England and Ireland. Here it is Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire, which is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Rutland and occupied today by the 11th Duke and Duchess. The Castle depicted was built in the early 1800s and completed only 10 years before this plate was made. Belvoir is derived from Norman French and means beautiful view, which the Castle certainly enjoys over the Vale of Belvoir. Today it is pronounced beaver. The Castle was a popular subject and appears on at least four different china series. At some point in the past a chunk 3 x 1.25 ins has been broken in two out of the bottom rim of this plate and it has been restuck with some minor loss and a hairline, down to the bottom of the bowl. A pity really, as apart from some fine crazing to the glaze this plate is in excellent condition. On display it looks fine and if you don't tell your friends they will never know! Typical blue printed cartouche backstamp with Belvoir Castle on a ribbon. Provenance: The personal collection of Gresham Copeland, passing by descent to his son Robert Copeland. Collection identification label on back AGC E.2. Dimensions: 25 cm / 9.75 ins Our ref: 19CN28019 Buy similar now |
