Long Bridge was made by several makers, but this example is from the Cambrian Pottery at Swansea, probably made in the days of the Haynes Dillwyn & Co. partnership. This design and specimen wares are illustrated in Swansea Blue and White Pottery by P D Bryce and S H Williams.
This plate is pearlware and printed in Royal blue with an early charm to the engraving. The rim is ochre, also known as dull yellow or old gold, which is a feature of Swansea wares in this design. The glaze is finely crazed, with some staining on the back. A few signs of age, including a tiny rim chip at about 4 o'clock, otherwise good condition.
Impressed backstamp Swansea.
Provenance: The personal collection of Gresham Copeland, passing by descent to his son Robert Copeland. Collection identification label on back AGC 341. This plate is illustrated in Spode's Willow Pattern by Robert Copeland plate 3, page 118.
