Imperial: Bowl 13.25 ins diameter 5 ins high Ewer 10 ins hig
Metric: Bowl 33.5 cm diameter 13 cm high Ewer 25 cm high
This is a wonderful and most unusual pattern. The main scene is of an elephant in full regalia with "passenger"! A large urn on the right dominates and in the background is a river with palatial buildings on the other side. The wonderful border has floral cartouches inset with alternate eastern type buildings and flowers. The ewer whilst basically the same pattern as the bowl has slightly more detail with extra people, a little more activity on the river and more buildings beyond. The border pattern detail around the inside and outside of the spout and along the line of the handle is wonderful.
Campania was produced at both the Glamorgan and Cambrian Potteries in Swansea, Wales, but is generally found marked for the former. It is most often found on teaware in green, black or purple, which has been found marked for Baker, Bevans & Irwin of the Glamorgan Pottery. This central scene appears not to have been recorded previously, which suggests that Campania was a series design, rather than a single view. On balance we suggest this ewer and bowl was produced at the Glamorgan Pottery by Baker, Bevans and Irwin.
The bowl has a little damage to the inside rim of the foot and a little mottling to the glaze otherwise is in excellent condition. The ewer has a little minor damage under the foot otherwise in excellent condition. Both pieces have minor crazing to the glaze.
